Tajikistan Bans “The Dictator” Because its Not Compatible with the Tajik ‘Mentality’

The Daily Mail (obvi) reports that Tajikistan has banned Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film the Dictator because it just isn’t in line with the noted Tajik ‘mentality’. Add that to the list of reasons of why I live for Central Asian states. In a completely incomprehensible statement, Daler Davatov, a Tajik film distributor, explained, “‘It’s wrong to compare us with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and with other countries.’It’s incorrect because we have a different mentality. We’re not going to give Dictator a premiere because of these considerations.”  In any case, I’m not sure how much good banning this movie will do, considering the country probably only has about 2 movie theaters in total. Because the Daily Mail has such a sophisticated and cosmopolitan readership, the DM has to explain to readers where and what Tajikistan is. Not only does it include a handy map, but the article details that “Tajikistan is an ex-Soviet state, a rugged mountainous country.”
